For Dr. Jordan Lee, the most difficult part of the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t been the 12-hour shifts in the intensive care unit, the extra precautions and safety protocols he now has to follow or even the fear that he, too, may eventually contract COVID-19. It’s been the isolation.

The Blood Bank of Hawaii (BBH) has formed a healthcare coalition to collect plasma from patients who have recovered from COVID-19 to treat seriously ill patients in hospitals throughout Hawaii. COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP), has recently emerged as a potentially promising early therapeutic option, and a national clinical trial is currently underway. A statewide coalition of the major hospital systems, including The Queen’s Health Systems, BBH, Hawaii State Department of Health, and other groups has formed to participate in this national trial and enable local patients to receive this experimental treatment. Two of our stellar ED nurses at The Queen’s Medical Center were recently featured on Hawaii News Now and KHON2 News after they postponed their wedding which was originally scheduled for last Friday.
